Brussels Welcomes « The Rooms » art + design fair by Sébastien Janssen and Patrick Mestdagh

The Mix-Brussels Outdoor Credit Joly Agency

Positioning itself as a playful and innovative alternative to conventional art fairs, The Rooms is set to debut in Brussels, drawing inspiration from groundbreaking formats like New York’s Gramercy, Brussels’ own White Hotel, and Bangkok’s Hotel Art Fair. The event is the brainchild of prominent art dealer Patrick Mestdagh (Galerie Patrick & Ondine Mestdagh) and gallery owner Sébastien Janssen (Sorry We’re Closed), who are bringing a fresh, immersive vision to the city’s art scene.

THE ROOMS, MODESTI PERDRIOLE, Antonio Da Ros Circa 1980

Set to run from May 22 to 25, 2025, The Rooms will transform dozens of rooms at Mix Brussels—a stylish 4-star hotel and club housed in the iconic former Royale Belge headquarters in Watermael-Boitsfort—into intimate gallery spaces. Launched in spring 2023, the hotel’s modernist 1960s architecture and lush green surroundings provide a striking and unconventional backdrop for this creative endeavor.

Born from the friendship between Mestdagh, known for his expertise in ethnic and non-European art, and Janssen, a leading figure in contemporary art, The Rooms is envisioned as a fair created by galleries, for galleries. The result is a more personal, engaging atmosphere that challenges traditional fair formats while offering collectors and visitors a novel way to experience art and antiques.

The fair’s unique format allows each exhibitor to transform a hotel room into a curated, immersive space, preserving the intimate character of the venue and offering visitors a deeply personal encounter with the artworks.

Occupying an entire wing of the hotel, The Rooms will host approximately thirty contemporary art galleries and art and antiques dealers. The exhibitor list includes both established names and more discreet players—some of whom rarely participate in traditional fairs—offering visitors a unique opportunity to explore an eclectic and richly layered selection of works.

From contemporary and modern art to jewelry, decorative arts, archaeology, and classical artifacts from Asia, Africa, and Oceania, the fair spans centuries and cultures. Highlights include non-European art, ancient treasures, and High Middle Ages objects, presented alongside cutting-edge contemporary creations.

THE ROOMS, SORRY WE ARE CLOSED, Roger Herman 2025

Notable participants include Mini Piece, Lancz, Aeroplastics, Sorry We’re Closed, Spax Project, Claes, Mestdagh, and De Spa—each bringing their distinct voice and curatorial perspective to this ambitious and intimate gathering.

Free and open to all, the event will feature a curated sculpture exhibition as well as a special room designed by Lionel Jadot (Zaventem Ateliers), the interior designer behind Mix Brussels, who will select and stage objects from participating galleries.

To meet growing public interest in art education and market insights, The Rooms will also host a series of conferences and roundtables in partnership with Puilaetco, a private bank specializing in wealth management, which has offices within the former Royale Belge.
