Alors qu’Art Anvers a su gagner sa place dans le calendrier des foires, cette 3ème édition voit son internationalisation se confirmer avec 72 galeries venant de 12 pays différents, contre 68 galeries venant de 11 pays en 2022, selon les invitations faites par le « Hosting Committee » comme le précise la directrice Nele Verhaeren. C’est l’une des particularités de cette « Boutique Fair » à taille humaine qui a à cœur de mettre en avant des artistes de moins de 40 ans. Les femmes représentent cette année 64% des artistes, ce dont Nele se réjouit. Les solo (17) et duo shows (10) sont encouragés afin d’optimiser l’expérience du visiteur. La foire bénéficie et participe également à l’attractivité de la scène anversoise avec de nombreuses expositions dans les musées partenaires : KMSKA, FOMU, M HKA… et galeries. Avant-goût et incontournables pour faire de cette visite un moment inoubliable alors que se profile le 40ème anniversaire d’Art Brussels au printemps 2024 avec plusieurs temps forts comme le dévoile Nele.
Art Antwerp has earned its place in the fair calendar, and this 3rd edition sees its internationalisation confirmed with 72 galleries from 12 different countries, compared with 68 galleries from 11 countries in 2022, according to the invitations made by the Hosting Committee, as explaines its director Nele Verhaeren. This is one of the distinctive features of this boutique fair, which is on a human scale, and is committed to showcasing artists under the age of 40. This year, 64% of the artists are women, which Nele is delighted about. Solo (17) and duo shows (10) are encouraged to optimise the visitor experience. The fair also benefits from and contributes to the attractiveness of the Antwerp art scene, with numerous exhibitions in partner museums such as : KMSKA, FOMU, M HKA… and galleries. A foretaste and a must-see to make your visit an unforgettable one, as the 40th anniversary of Art Brussels looms in spring 2024, with several highlights as Nele reveals.
- Avec quel état d’esprit envisagez-vous cette 3ème édition de la foire ?
Nous sommes actuellement plongés dans les préparatifs de la 3ème édition d’Art Antwerp, portés par l’engouement pour cette foire qui ne cesse de croitre d’année en année. Art Antwerp bénéficie d’un solide soutien de la part des galeristes, des artistes, des musées, de la ville et des amateurs d’art. La scène artistique est tellement riche à Anvers.
Comme pour n’importe quelle nouvelle initiative, il nous a fallu un certain temps pour se frayer une place dans le paysage culturel. Désormais, nous avons la conviction qu’Art Antwerp s’est parfaitement intégrée et n’a plus besoin d’être présentée. La foire est devenue un point d’attraction international particulièrement prisé par les collectionneurs des pays limitrophes. Une visite d’Art Antwerp, qui se fait en quelques heures seulement, s’accompagne souvent d’une escapade en ville pour découvrir ses expositions, se laisser tenter par une séance de shopping dans les maisons des grands maitres de l’industrie de la mode, ou encore profiter d’une expérience culinaire.
How do you see this 3rd edition of the fair ?
We are currently dealing with the last preparations for the 3rd edition of Art Antwerp, thrilled by the enthusiasm for this fair, which continues to grow year on year. Art Antwerp enjoys strong support from gallery owners, artists, museums, the city and art lovers. Antwerp has such a rich art scene !
As with any new initiative, it took us a while to find our place in the cultural landscape. Now we’re convinced that Art Antwerp has integrated perfectly and needs no further introduction. The fair has become an international platform for collectors from neighbouring countries. A visit to Art Antwerp, which takes just a few hours, is often accompanied by a trip into the city to discover its exhibitions, indulge in a shopping spree in the homes of the great masters of the fashion industry, or enjoy a culinary experience.
- Remarquez-vous une évolution du profil des galeries participantes ?
Absolument. Il est fascinant d’observer comment Art Antwerp a évoluée en trois éditions, passant d’une foire plutôt régionale à une véritable plateforme internationale.
La première édition fut impactée par la pandémie de Covid, rassemblant principalement des grandes galeries belges et des pays voisins à l’affut de nouvelles opportunités, tout en conservant une représentation significative des galeries anversoises. La plupart des galeries participantes étaient déjà habituées à participer à de nombreuses foires chaque année. On pourrait conclure que cela représentait une occasion en or pour les galeries ayant déjà une clientèle établie en Belgique et cherchant ardemment à rencontrer des collectionneurs belges reconnus à l’échelle mondiale.
La deuxième édition a marqué un retour à la normale avec la reprise des foires internationales. Certaines galeries sont revenues à leur calendrier habituel et ont préféré les grandes foires. D’autres, notamment des galeries avec un programme plus jeune, ont exprimé leur volonté de participer à Art Antwerp. Le succès de la première édition aura tout de même permis de susciter l’intérêt de galeries venant de plus loin, bien que toujours concentrées en Europe.
Cette tendance s’est poursuivie à la troisième édition d’Art Antwerp. La foire continue à s’internationaliser avec cette année, 72 galeries venant de 12 pays différents, contre 68 galeries venant de 11 pays en 2022 et 59 galeries provenant de 6 pays au lancement de la foire. La surface des stands se réduit, mais le nombre de galeries augmente. Art Antwerp est devenue en quelque sorte une Boutique Fair. Une petite foire au programme international où une attention toute particulière est portée sur l’expérience de ses participants et ses visiteurs. La foire est plus intime, plus personnelle dans son approche.
Quant au contenu, les galeristes ont carte blanche et nous remarquons qu’il est beaucoup question de mettre en valeur des artistes de moins de 40 ans. L‘année dernière, les présentations des stands étaient très colorées, joyeuses, sculpturales, festives, oniriques, intimes, voire poétiques… Sans vouloir tirer des conclusions hâtives, nous avons le sentiment que cette tendance persiste. Il s’agit souvent des créations très récentes ; en minorité des œuvres d’artistes à redécouvrir. La dédication à la technique, le soin apporté, la recherche pour parvenir à une belle finition, semblent également omniprésents.
Art Antwerp 2023 offrira une forte représentation féminine puisque 64% des artistes au programme sont des femmes. Cela témoigne d’un engagement envers la promotion et la reconnaissance du travail des artistes femmes. Cette démarche contribue non seulement à la diversité artistique, mais encourage aussi une représentation plus équilibrée des talents féminins dans le monde de l’art contemporain.
Are you noticing a ghange in the galleries’ profile ?
Absolutely. It’s fascinating to observe how Art Antwerp has evolved over three editions, from a rather regional fair to a truly international platform.
The first edition was affected by the Covid pandemic, bringing together mainly major galleries from Belgium and neighbouring countries on the lookout for new opportunities, while retaining a significant representation of Antwerp-based galleries. Most of the participating galleries were already used to taking part in numerous fairs each year. One might conclude that this represented a golden opportunity for galleries with an established clientele in Belgium, eager to meet internationally recognised Belgian collectors.
The second edition marked a return to normality with the resumption of international fairs. Some galleries returned to their usual schedule, preferring the major fairs. Others, notably galleries with a younger programme, expressed their desire to take part in Art Antwerp. The success of the first edition of Art Antwerp also attracted galleries from further afield, although these were still concentrated in Europe.
This trend continued at the third edition of Art Antwerp. The fair continues to become more international, with 72 galleries from 12 different countries this year, compared with 68 galleries from 11 countries in 2022 and 59 galleries from 6 countries at the fair’s launch. The surface area of the stands is shrinking, but the number of galleries is increasing. Art Antwerp has become something of a Boutique Fair. A small fair with an international programme where particular attention is paid to the experience of its participants and visitors. The fair is more intimate, more personal in its approach. In terms of content, the gallery owners have carte blanche, and we’ve noticed that there’s a lot of talk about showcasing artists under the age of 40. Last year, the stands were very colourful, cheerful, sculptural, festive, dreamlike, intimate, even poetic… Without wishing to jump to conclusions, we have the feeling that this trend is continuing. These are often recent creations.
In the minority are works by artists to be rediscovered. Dedication to technique, care and research to achieve a fine finish also seem to be omnipresent.
Art Antwerp 2023 will feature a strong female representation, with 64% of the artists on the programme being women. This reflects a commitment to promoting and recognising the work of women artists. This not only contributes to artistic diversity, but also encourages a more balanced representation of female talent in the contemporary art world.

37% des galeries participantes à Art Antwerp choisissent de présenter une exposition solo ou en duo. Ce choix est une déclaration de gratitude envers les visiteurs. C’est une approche que nous encourageons toujours, car elle optimise considérablement les chances qu’a un spectateur d’établir une connexion profonde avec l’œuvre d’un artiste. Les présentations solo à Art Antwerp sont variées, tant dans l’utilisation des matériaux que dans les périodes de création, allant de l’après-guerre à aujourd’hui; et ce grâce à des artistes établis ainsi qu’émergents du monde entier. Je pense notamment aux œuvres photographiques en noir et blanc de l’artiste d’origine ghanéenne James Bernor, des œuvres émouvantes des années 50 à 80, à découvrir au stand de la Galerie Clémentine de la Féronnière ; à la présentation solo du jeune peintre belge Gommaer Gilliams avec Sofie Van de Velde; aux deux présentations solo juxtaposées de la galerie Guy Pieters par l’artiste conceptuel belge Kris Martin et les œuvres du peintre et réalisateur américain Julian Schnabel; aux paisibles peintures à l’huile sur bois du jeune artiste chinois Kong Lingnan représenté par la galerie Capsule Shanghai et à la présentation solo de la galerie Fontana de Feipel & Bechameil qui exposera des artistes travaillant en duo sur un nouveau corpus d’œuvres en céramique montrant l’interférence à travers des fragments du corps humain, de l’animal et du végétal.
37% of the galleries participating in Art Antwerp choose to present a solo or duo exhibition. This choice is a declaration of gratitude to visitors. It is an approach that we always encourage, as it greatly optimises the chances of a viewer making a deep connection with an artist’s work. The solo presentations at Art Antwerp are varied, both in their use of materials and in the periods in which they were created, ranging from the post-war period to the present day; and this is thanks to both established and emerging artists from all over the world. I’m thinking in particular of the black-and-white photographic works by Ghanaian-born artist James Bernor, moving works from the 50s to the 80s, to be discovered at the stand of Galerie Clémentine de la Féronnière; the solo presentation by young Belgian painter Gommaer Gilliams with Sofie Van de Velde; the two juxtaposed solo presentations at Galerie Guy Pieters by Belgian conceptual artist Kris Martin and the works of American painter and director Julian Schnabel; the peaceful oil paintings on wood by the young Chinese artist Kong Lingnan represented by Capsule Shanghai gallery, and the solo presentation at Fontana gallery by Feipel & Bechameil, who will be exhibiting artists working in duo on a new body of ceramic work showing interference through fragments of the human body, animals and plants.

Many initiatives will be launched during the fair, both by the participating galleries and by collectors who are prepared to open the doors of their collections to share their common passion for contemporary art with the public. The OFF programme of our partner institutions also includes :

ECHO reflects on the intimate connection between clothing and memory through the lens of Louise Bourgeois, Simone Rocha and Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker.
Krasse Koppen – KMSKA
Interest in the tronie, the old Dutch word for ‘face’ surged in the 17th century, when artists like Rubens, Rembrandt and Vermeer poured their talent into painting the human face. The results are often small, but stunningly painted, drawn or engraved: intimate works that bring us closer to the artist than ever. Never before has the genre been covered so comprehensively. Turning Heads at the KMSKA brings together no fewer than 76 of the most eloquent masterpieces from Belgian and international collections.
Dorothy Iannone – Love Is Forever, Isn’t It? – M HKA
The exhibition Love Is Forever, Isn’t It? presents one of the most comprehensive surveys of Dorothy Iannone’s prolific body of work, to be showcased at M HKA.
CARPETLAND. CRITICAL TAPESTRIES. – Extra City
In the new group exhibition Carpetland. Critical Tapestries. you will walk through monumental tapestries and textile that reveal worldly complexities. This tongue in cheek titled exhibition attempts to look beyond the hype of the pleasing textile. You won’t find an endless supply of mass-produced carpets, but a dozen artworks by artists who look beyond the purely aesthetic side of textiles and tapestries.They pose critical questions about the perception and appreciation of this medium that is situated between art and craft.

Her Voice – Echoes of Chantal Akerman – FOMU
The group exhibition Her Voice – Echoes of Chantal Akerman presents photographic and video works by seven contemporary artists inspired by the work of Belgian filmmaker Chantal Akerman. Manon de Boer, Moyra Davey, Gabby Laurent, Frida Orupabo, Joanna Piotrowska, Collier Schorr and Carmen Winant explore what it means today to be a woman, artist, mother, daughter and lover.

- Comment se présente Art Brussels ?
Art Brussels 2024 célébrera sa 40e édition avec une atmosphère festive et de nombreux nouveaux projets passionnants. La sélection des participants pour Art Brussels 2024 vient d’être finalisée en collaboration avec le comité. Il est actuellement trop tôt pour annoncer les résultats, car nous devons d’abord informer les galeries ayant soumis leur candidature. Cependant, nous pouvons déjà révéler que la foire sera plus internationale que jamais et qu’une nouvelle section sera introduite. Art Brussels se tiendra du 25 au 28 avril 2024 à Brussels Expo.
What does Art Brussels next edition look like ?
Art Brussels 2024 will celebrate its 40th edition with a festive atmosphere and many exciting new projects. The selection of participants for Art Brussels 2024 has just been finalised in collaboration with the committee. It is currently too early to announce the results, as we must first inform the galleries that have applied. However, we can already reveal that the fair will be more international than ever and that a new section will be introduced. Art Brussels will be held from 25 to 28 April 2024 at Brussels Expo.
