A l’occasion de la foire Art Rotterdam toute la ville est en ébullition autour de musées (Kunsthal..), centres d’art (Kunstinstituut Melly..), artist-run spaces (Brutus, Garage…). C’est l’artiste française basée à Bruxelles Nadia Guerroui, participant à l’exposition collective de l’espace « A Tale of A Tub » qui m’indique le lieu au sein d’anciens bains publics du complexe de logements sociaux de l’architecte néerlandais Justus van Effen. La directrice Julia Geerlings revient sur l’ADN et la programmation de l’espace directement inspirés de la vocation sociale des bains publics. L’exposition « Au-delà d’une certaine limite, pas de retour possible » inspirée de Kafka regroupe des œuvres d’artistes internationaux. Qelle est la vocation et le projet de votre espace ?
A Tale of A Tub est un ancien bain public au cœur du complexe monumental Justus van Effen, une expérience de logement social dans les années 1920 à Rotterdam. Le programme est centré sur les questions de savoir comment l’art peut contribuer à notre compréhension des problèmes sociaux, politiques et écologiques actuels et est encadré par une pensée écologique intersectionnelle et des pratiques basées sur le soin.
Comment est consruite la programmation ?
A Tale of A Tub a repris la fonction sociale des bains publics depuis sa création, et l’accent sera mis encore davantage sur cette fonction dans les années à venir, dans le cadre du programme intitulé « Bathhouse of Care ». Les thèmes inhérents aux pratiques des bains publics, tels que la communauté, les soins, le corps, l’identité, la spiritualité, sont abordés par le biais de formes d’art, de programmes publics et d’autres activités culturelles. En outre, A Tale of A Tub souhaite collaborer davantage avec les communautés locales de Spangen afin de créer un espace de rencontres, de conversations, de contes et de soins communautaires. L’histoire sociale, culturelle et spirituelle du bain public correspond symboliquement dans plusieurs cultures aux multiples communautés de la diaspora qui vivent dans la région depuis des générations ou qui viennent d’arriver. Par exemple, un bain public fonctionne également comme un espace pour diverses formes de soins, comme les soins personnels, les soins sociaux et les soins environnementaux, et l’espace favorise le sentiment d’interdépendance avec les autres et l’environnement.
L’exposition actuelle : présentation et enjeux
L’exposition « Beyond a Certain Point There is No Return » marque la troisième édition d’une collaboration annuelle entre A Tale of A Tub et Tlön Projects et présente une variété d’œuvres d’art sélectionnées dans la collection imaginaire de Tlön Projects. Cette collection imaginaire est formée par la convergence d’œuvres d’art sélectionnées dans diverses collections d’art privées internationales. Tlön Projects vise ainsi à donner accès à des œuvres d’art qui, autrement, auraient été largement protégées de l’accès du public. Le titre de l’exposition est tiré d’un aphorisme de Franz Kafka : « Au-delà d’un certain point, il n’y a pas de retour possible. Ce point doit être atteint ». – l’exposition met en conversation des œuvres d’artistes de différentes régions et générations. Bien qu’elle porte le titre de la citation de Kafka, l’exposition ne fait qu’effleurer l’héritage de l’écrivain. Elle tourne plutôt autour de l’urgence de saisir et de rendre visible le « point de non-retour », qui a submergé le monde ces dernières années, des pandémies aux guerres en passant par le changement climatique. Le « point de non-retour » signifie une jonction critique, un changement irrévocable, une impossibilité de retour. Mais c’est aussi en soi quelque chose d’évasif et de difficile à saisir. Quand le point de non-retour s’est-il produit, et comment peut-on le reconnaître ? Ou bien ne prend-on réellement conscience de ce tournant qu’après coup ?

What is the vocation and project of your space ?
A Tale of A Tub is a former bathhouse at the heart of the monumental Justus van Effen complex, a social housing experiment in 1920s in Rotterdam. The program is centred around questions of how art can contribute to our understanding of present-day social, political, and ecological issues and framed through intersectional ecological thinking and care-based practices.
How is buit the programmation ?
A Tale of A Tub has taken over the social function of the bathhouse since its inception, and the focus will be on this function even more in the coming years in the program named « Bathhouse of Care ». Themes embedded in public bathing practices, such as community, care, body, identity, spirituality, are addressed through forms of art, public programming and other cultural activities. In addition, A Tale of A Tub wants to collaborate more with the local communities in Spangen to create a space for encounters, conversations, storytelling and community care. The social, cultural and spiritual history of the public bath symbolically corresponds in several cultures to the multiple diaspora communities that have lived in the area for generations or have just arrived. For example, a bathhouse also functions as a space for various forms of care such as personal care, social care and environmental care, and the space promotes the feeling of interdependence with each other and the environment.
The actual show : presentation and focus
The exhibition Beyond a Certain Point There is No Return marks the third edition of an annual collaboration between A Tale of A Tub and Tlön Projects and presents a variety of artworks selected from the imaginary collection of Tlön Projects. This imaginary collection is formed by the convergence of selected artworks from various international private art collections, whereby Tlön Projects aims to generate access to artworks which otherwise would have been largely shielded from public access. Taking its title from an aphorism by Franz Kafka — “Beyond a certain point there is no return. This point has to be reached.” — the exhibition puts into conversation artworks by artists from different regions and generations. Though titled with Kafka’s quote, the exhibition touches on the writer’s heritage only tangentially. Instead, it spins around the urgency to seize and make visible the “point of no return,” which has been overwhelming the world in the recent years, from pandemics to wars to climate change. “Point of no return” signifies a critical junc-ture, an irrevocable shift, an impossibility of return. But it is also itself something evasive and difficult to grasp. When did the point of no return occur, and how can one recognize it? Or do we only really become aware of this turning point after the fact, in its aftermath ?
Rotterdam Art Week : your implication.
During Rotterdam Art Week our opening hours are prolonged and we will have several performances and guided tours. During this week we always have many (international) visitors and we are an official partner of the Rotterdam Art Week. This year we are proud to present the performance Two Planets Have Been Colliding for Thousands of Years by Dora Garcia. García’s durational performance is the result of a conversation between the artist, Andrea Valdés and Manuel Asín in which the image of two planets colliding for thousands of years until they became one emerged. For Dora García, this image was a perfect description of the relationship between poetry and philosophy. The artist borrowed this idea and turned it into the setting for an extremely simple and contemplative performance, one with no fixed duration, no clear beginning or end.
